Young digital natives drive pre-school education tech

Education technology, or ed-tech, is growing fast, due to learner-centric platforms as well as an unexpected boost from the pandemic. Its global market size was valued at more than US$89 billion in 2020 and is projected to grow at almost 20% a year between 2021 and 2028 to reach over US$377 billion. The ed-tech industry also received a huge injection of US$21 billion from venture capitalists worldwide in 2021.

Ed-tech has made a big impact on preschool education. Apps, e-books, websites, streaming videos and online tutorials have changed the way pre-schoolers learn. Ed-tech helps young digital natives – already familiar with these platforms – to further build good skills and knowledge.

However, criticisms remain about using technology to enhance the learning and teaching process. Critics argue the digital emphasis means that children lack real-world social interaction and collaboration opportunities, while discouraging hands-on creativity away from the devices.

How can ed-tech developers help educators create a balanced and enriching learning environment?
