TikTok is a video sharing app for short videos. It was launched worldwide in 2018 by Beijing-based ByteDance, following the success of Douyin in China and Thailand. Douyin was launched in 2016 and attracted 100 million users in the 2 countries within a year.

The growth of TikTok has also been rapid, reporting over 800 million active users worldwide by September 2020. The app is now in over 150 countries and 75 languages, and is extremely popular among teenagers and young adults of all genders.

Studies show that 72% of consumers prefer to learn about new products or services by watching videos. So, while this social media app is not a fully-fledged advertising platform and in its early stages as a marketing channel, it is expected to be the next big thing in video marketing.
