Spire Consultant, Saffira Adnin, shares insights on the growing popularity of social commerce in Indonesia with TechnoBusiness.

New shopping capabilities are offered on some social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. Called social commerce, it includes product listing, promotion, and transaction at the social media platforms.

This phenomenon is significant in Indonesia as the country has 170 million active social media users and 88.1% of the population who use the internet use e-commerce services to purchase products.

Saffira discloses that the gross merchandise value, or GMV, obtained by social commerce is growing at the annual rate of 55.3% between 2018 and 2022, reaching US$25 million. This presents a great opportunity for MSMEs to take advantage of online e-commerce and social media platforms.
