Careers in Information Technology and the Environment are seen to be the jobs of the future in Korea
According to a study conducted by Spire Research and Consulting Korea, Computer & Information Security and Environmental Engineering are seen by Korean youth as the occupations with the best career prospects.
300 students were surveyed on their career choices in a recent study commissioned by the Korea Employment Information Service and conducted by Spire Research and Consulting Korea. Out of these, 55 picked Computer &
Information Security Technician and Environmental Engineer followed by Computer System Developer (48), Social Worker and Web Developer (44 each) to be the occupations offering the best career prospects in the future (Table 1).
Curiously, the most popular jobs among the students overall were teaching and practicing medicine (Table 2), none of which are considered the jobs with the best prospects going forward.
Occupations in medicine, however, are seen to be highly lucrative. Lawyers, Dentists, Professors, General Practitioners, Specialist Doctors and Chinese Herbalists are perceived to have the highest income (Table 3).
The selection criteria used by students to pick a job are, first and foremost, salary (45-46%), then satisfaction/spiritual reward (36%), and aptitude (31%).
Close to half of students said their dream job was different from what their parents hoped for them.
Students also said that Policemen (125) were the most indispensable profession to the public, followed by Cleaner (90), Caretaker to the aged (74), Fire-fighter (71), Social Worker (69) and Public Bus Driver (68).
