China to invest in water-efficient farmlands

The Chinese authorities will create a fund worth RMB38 billion (USD1.27 billion) by 2015 to develop water-efficient farmlands in four North-eastern regions, which produce one-fifth of the country’s grain collectively.

Over the next four years, the farmers can use the funds to promote efficient irrigation technology to ease water shortages and increase grain production.

China’s efforts of conserving and better managing water resources are in tune with its 12th Five-Year Plan (2011 – 2015), which pledges to improve the nation’s energy efficiency.

With such water-saving plans in place, is China on the right path to a sustainable water future?
