Myanmar strives towards sustainable tourism

Over the past decade, tourism in Myanmar has increased multifold, with 30% more tourists visiting the country in the first half of 2012, as compared to 2011.

The government has responded to this huge influx with the ‘Responsible Tourism Policy’. Centered on sustainability, it provides a list of guidelines aimed at protecting the environment and promoting stable economic growth whilst reducing poverty. The policy dictates the upgrading of sewage plants and usage of solar energy, as well as pledges support to businesses that will drive tourism. Furthermore, it calls for a better integration of the local population by providing access to education and training so that they become contributors to the tourism industry.

Will Myanmar be able to jump on the bandwagon fast enough and achieve sustainable tourism?
