Business, fans poised for the big kick-off tonight

A front page article in the Business Times on 9 June 2006 (pg 1) splashed news on World Cup fever hitting businesses hard, with some support from Spire’s research.

Retailers stand to score, with soccer jerseys and other related products being one of the many items flying off the shelves in Singapore.

Others include flat-panel TVs, cable vision and, of course, monetary bets. Even companies as diverse as hotels and logistics are reaping benefits from using the World Cup as a marketing tool.

On the other hand, the stock and property markets are sidelined due to a slowdown in sales.

Some products, services set to catch a blast of soccer fever

The article in the 9 Jun 06 issue of Today (pg 46) on a boost in products and services was based on Spire’s recent research.

The experience of past decade points to a sales bonanza during global sporting events, most of all the highly-anticipated Fifa World Cup that occurs once every four years.

Reports state that there will be a technological shift in the TV and mobile phone markets. Advertising will also see a rise in online share. Companies are clamouring to sponsor their way into consumers’ hearts. However, not all will see their efforts pay off. A study has been done on the effectiveness of sponsorship but the results were deemed inconclusive.
