Indonesia memiliki potensi wilayah sekitar 23 juta hektar tanah untuk pengembangan pohon jarak (Jatropha Curcas) sebagai bahan baku biodiesel dengan kapasitas produksi 18 miliar kg biodiesel.

Sebuah studi yang dilakukan Spire Research & Consulting menyebutkan lahan potensial tersebut terdapat merata di seluruh wilayah Nusantara mulai Sumatera, Jawa, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, dan deretan pulau dari Bali hingga Papua.

“Dengan luasan lahan itu, Jatropha Curcas dapat membuat Indonesia menjadi pemimpin biofuel dunia,” menurut laporan penelitian tersebut.

Kapasitas 18 miliar kg tersebut, ungkap laporan itu, diestimasikan berdasarkan asumsi satu pohon jarak dapat menghasilkan 4.500 kg biji jarak yang setara dengan 1.500 kg biodiesel.

Dalam satu hektar tanah diperkirakan memiliki populasi tanaman sebanyak 2.500 pohon. 

Sekretaris Timnas Bahan Bakar Nabati mengatakan pemerintah menerima proposal kerja sama pengembangan biofuel dari beberapa perusahaan asing asal China, Jepang, Korea, Malaysia, dan Inggris sejak awal tahun. CNOOC (Cina) berkomitmen berinvestasi sekitar US$5,5 miliar.

Genting Biofuel dan Indomal (Malaysia) juga berniat investasi dengan total nilai US$4 miliar. Selain itu, Kanematsu Corporation (Jepang) juga telah mengivestasi US$25 juta untuk mendirikan pabrik ethanol berkapasitas 100.000 liter.

Indonesia potentially has 23 million ha of uncultivated land to cultivate jatropha curcas for biodiesel development, leading to 18 billion kg of biodiesel.

A study conducted by Spire Research & Consulting revealed that the potential critical soil is spread widely throughout the region, ranging from Sumatera, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali and Papua.

According to that research, “With that ample of land, Jatropha Curcas may help make Indonesia as a leading biofuel leader.”

The 18 billion kg of biodiesel was derived from the estimation that 1 ha of jatropha curcas tree can produced 4,500 kg of seeds which equal to 1,500 kg biodiesel.

It is estimated that 2,500 plants will be grown in 1 ha of jatropha curcas plantation.

The Secretary of the National biofuel team had stated that the government has been receiving dozens of new proposals to develop biofuel from foreign companies such as China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and England since the beginning of this year. CNOOC (China) is committed to invest US$ 5.5 billion.

Genting Biofuel and Indomal (Malaysia) are also planning to invest in total of US$ 4 billion. In addition, Kanematsu Corporation (Japan) has planned to invest US25 million to establish a 100,000 litre capacity ethanol plant.
