How Smart is your Kitchen?

Smart trash cans that reduce odour and scan food before disposal, managing both food wastage and kitchen hygiene. Smart scales provide not only the weight of the food but the nutritional value. A programmable coffee maker that serves you your first cup of coffee the second you step into the kitchen in the morning. From smart refrigerators to motion-sensitive kitchen faucets, creating a tech-advanced kitchen is now on many household agendas.

The global smart kitchen market reached US$14.47 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach US$43 billion by 2027. Driving this growth are factors such as faster cooking speed, reduced effort, and increases in consumers’ disposable income.

Smart kitchens also offer other advantages from lower electricity consumption, maintenance, and high durability. However, these devices are expensive, heavily dependent on the Internet to function, and are associated with high repair and maintenance costs, creating barriers to more widespread usage and affordability.

How can the cost of smart kitchen technology be lowered to foster wider adoption?
