Designing Age-Friendly Cities: The Korean Model

October 28, 2022

Dr Justin Hanse Lee, Managing Director of Spire Korea, recently gave a talk about Korean government policy on designing silver towns at ELDEX Asia 2022 in Singapore. The two-day event, in its second edition, featured an exhibition, medical and B2B conferences and workshops for care professionals and consumers.

Dr Lee is an expert on Korea’s silver industry, with deep knowledge of the Korean senior and elderly care industry. He spoke about the demographics of the ageing population in Korea and its impact on social change in the country. He also shed light on the different kinds of retirement villages – residential community or housing complexes that are designed for older adults who are generally able to care for themselves – that are available to the elderly in Korea.

The Korean government, he highlighted, is looking at different ways to better integrate and care for the nation’s aged. He cited examples including the ongoing efforts to make the Korean capital, Seoul, an Age-Friendly City, with purpose-built  inclusivity for the old in areas as diverse as housing, transport and employment. He also gave a snapshot of the Socheon Amenity Welfare City, as well as integrated community care plans for managing the different needs of older Koreans.
